(10. 3.) 1741 — 1702 und 1703 Besuch der Höfe in Berlin und Hannover. 1704 Secretary of State of Scotland; trug dazu bei, die Union mit England zustande zu bringen. 1707 Erhebung zum duke of Roxburghe. Vertretung Schottlands in 4 Parlamenten. Unter Georg I. Privy Councillor und Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland; steht loyal zum König während der jakobitischen Erhebung 1715. 1716–1725 wiederum Secretary of State, entlassen wegen seines Widerstandes gegen die Malz-Steuer.
